Object Details

Catalogue Note

A substantial hollow-cast bronze Buddha head in a Himalayan-inspired style, probably made during the 20th century. The sculpture combines a broad meditative face, long pierced earlobes, tightly modelled hair curls and a raised ushnisha with a warm brown copper-alloy surface.

Style and iconography

The urna on the forehead, elongated earlobes and ushnisha are established attributes of Buddha imagery. The modelling draws on Nepalese and wider Himalayan visual traditions while also incorporating Southeast Asian influences, so the piece is catalogued by style rather than assigned to a specific regional workshop.

Bronze and construction

The head is hollow cast in bronze or a copper alloy and shows hand-finishing, surface variation and naturally developed patina. The open underside reveals the hollow construction. Older filling or attachment material survives around parts of the hair and upper finial.

Condition

Good vintage condition with patina, surface wear, deposits and signs of an older attachment or repair around the upper finial. The face and long earlobes remain largely intact.
