Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 58.5 × W 16 cm
Weight: 3 kg
Material: Bronze / copper alloy
Estimated period: 19th century or older
Origin: Java, Indonesia
Style: Majapahit Revival
Gesture: Double teaching / Vitarka gesture

A tall Javanese bronze Buddha in a Majapahit-revival idiom, standing 58.5 cm high and shown with both hands raised in teaching gestures. The sculpture has a slender vertical silhouette, a double-lotus base and a naturally varied green-brown surface.

Majapahit-revival form

The elongated proportions, Javanese coiffure and decorative vocabulary look back to artistic traditions associated with pre-modern Java. An earlier catalogue record places the historic core in the 19th century or older. This listing deliberately describes the piece as Majapahit Revival rather than assigning it to the historical Majapahit period itself; the dating therefore remains an attribution.

Double Vitarka gesture

Both hands form a teaching gesture related to vitarka mudra, symbolising explanation, transmission and discussion of Buddhist doctrine. The mirrored gesture gives the standing figure an unusually balanced frontal composition.

Material and conservation

The figure is cast in a copper-alloy bronze and retains green oxidation, darker patina and small gold-toned surface residues. A previous structural break has been stabilised with modern conservation material; ultraviolet examination helps distinguish this intervention from the surrounding older surface.

Condition

Historic surface with oxidation, wear and an old structural repair that has been professionally stabilised. The restoration is visible in the detailed photographs and is disclosed as part of the condition record.
