Catalogue Note

This substantial gilt bronze depicts Shakyamuni Buddha seated in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with enlightenment. The sculpture belongs to the Kashmir-Himalayan and wider Sino-Tibetan metalworking tradition.

Original gilding survives on the exterior and in protected underside and interior areas. The worn high points, stronger gold remnants in recesses and extensive mineral salt deposits record prolonged devotional handling and natural ageing.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 4 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
