Object Details

Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 20 × W 11 cm
Material: Bronze with remnants of gilding
Estimated period: ca. 17th–18th century
Region: Post-Angkor / early Ayutthaya cultural zone, Thailand–Cambodia
Style: Khmer-inspired

A bronze Buddha head with Khmer-type sculptural features, including a calm closed gaze, softly modelled facial planes and a vertically treated headdress. The surface retains dark patina, green oxidation and traces of earlier gilding.

Attribution

The object is attributed to the 17th–18th century within the post-Angkor / early Ayutthaya cultural zone. This dating follows the earlier catalogue record for the same 20 × 11 cm sculpture and is presented as an art-historical attribution rather than an absolute manufacture date.

Condition

Older surface with patina, oxidation, wear to raised areas and surviving gilt traces. Please examine all photographs as part of the condition record.

Iconography and Context

Presented without the full body, a Buddha head concentrates attention on the meditative expression, elongated earlobes, hair treatment and ushnisha. Surface and silhouette become especially important to the sculpture’s impact.

Condition and Display

The bronze surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 9 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
