Object Details

Catalogue Note

A large Burmese seated Buddha from around 1970, carved from heavy wood and richly decorated in the continuing Mandalay tradition. Measuring 87 cm high and 79 cm wide, the sculpture combines red and pale polychrome, gold-toned decoration and small mirror-glass inlays.

Mandalay tradition in the 20th century

The broad seated posture, serene face and ornate robe continue visual conventions associated with Mandalay Buddhist sculpture. This example is deliberately catalogued as a circa-1970 work rather than as a 19th-century temple image, illustrating how established Burmese forms remained active in later workshops.

Bhumisparsha mudra

The right hand reaches down toward the earth while the left rests in the lap. This is bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the Buddha’s enlightenment.

Wood and decorative surface

The sculpture is built from substantial carved wooden sections and weighs 28.4 kg. The painted and gold-toned surface has developed extensive craquelure, wear and local losses. Mirror and glass elements remain around parts of the robe and pedestal.

Condition

Vintage condition with craquelure, shrinkage cracks, surface wear, discolouration and local losses to paint, gold-toned decoration and glass inlay. These features are visible throughout the photographic record.
