Catalogue Note

This large Burmese Mandalay Buddha was carved by hand from solid wood and finished with gold leaf over a traditional red preparation layer. Inlaid eyes lend the calm face an attentive presence, while engraved robe patterns and irregular glass inlays reinforce the sculpture's handcrafted character.

Extensive original gilding remains alongside natural wear, craquelure and exposed red lacquer on the face, hands and robe folds. The hollowed underside confirms traditional wood-carving construction rather than modern moulding.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

The carved hand-carved solid wood with original gold leaf over red lacquer retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 10 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.

Collector’s Note

A c. 1850–1900 burmese mandalay wooden buddha with balanced display presence, combining its myanmar (burma) hand-carved solid wood with original gold leaf over red lacquer character with clearly readable sculptural detail.
