Catalogue Note

Dimensions: L 160 × H 36 cm
Material: Carved hardwood with red lacquer, gilding and glass/mirror inlay
Origin: Burma / Myanmar
Period: Mid-20th century, circa 1950–1970
Subject: Reclining Buddha / Parinirvana

A monumental Burmese reclining Buddha carved in Mandalay style. The robe border is built up in relief and enriched with small glass or mirror elements over a traditional red lacquer ground and gilt finish.

At 160 cm long, this is an architectural-scale Buddhist sculpture with a strong temple aesthetic. Wear to the gold exposes the warm red foundation beneath, creating the layered surface characteristic of older Burmese devotional woodwork.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related wear, small shrinkage cracks and losses to the decorative surface.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

The carved carved hardwood with red lacquer, gilding and glass/mirror inlay retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 17 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
