Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 46 × W 23 cm
Weight: 8.8 kg
Material: Bronze
Origin: China
Period: Late 20th–early 21st century

A large bronze Budai, commonly known in the West as the Laughing Buddha, shown smiling with raised arms and playful children climbing at the sides. In Chinese Buddhist and popular religious culture Budai is associated with contentment, abundance and generosity.

This is a later decorative-devotional bronze rather than an antique sculpture. Its substantial 8.8 kg weight and warm brown-gold patina give it a strong physical presence.

Condition

Very good condition with natural variations in the bronze patina.

Iconography and Context

Budai is the jovial Chinese monk associated with generosity, contentment and good fortune. His relaxed body, broad smile and informal presence distinguish him from formal images of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Condition and Display

The bronze surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 11 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
