A large standing Chinese Medicine Buddha, or Bhaisajyaguru, cast in bronze and measuring 98 cm high. The figure stands on a double lotus base and holds a medicine vessel, the attribute that identifies the healing Buddha within Mahayana Buddhist imagery.
Bhaisajyaguru
The Medicine Buddha is associated with healing, clarity and the alleviation of suffering. Here the upright posture and large scale give the figure a calm architectural presence while the vessel provides the principal iconographic identifier.
Bronze and surface
The sculpture weighs 23 kg and has a dark brown bronze surface with areas of blue-green copper-alloy oxidation. The aged patina is uneven and naturally concentrated in protected areas, highlighting the modelling of the robe and lotus pedestal.
Date and condition
The sculpture is catalogued as a vintage Chinese work from the mid-to-late 20th century rather than as an antique. It remains in good vintage condition with surface wear, oxidation and casting irregularities visible in the photographs.
