Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 64 × W 38.5 cm | Weight: 16 kg | Period: first half 20th century

A large East Asian figure of Guanyin standing above a dynamic dragon-fish and wave base. The composition combines the calm vertical presence of the Bodhisattva with a strongly modelled aquatic support.

Iconography

Guanyin is the East Asian manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. Water imagery frequently accompanies Guanyin and reinforces the figure's association with mercy and salvation.

Material and condition

Heavy bronze or copper-alloy casting with a dark patina, areas of surface wear and surviving gilt-coloured traces. The precise workshop and regional origin remain unconfirmed, so the attribution is kept broadly East Asian.

Iconography and Context

Guanyin, Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig is the bodhisattva of compassion. Crown, lotus, vase and hand gestures vary by region, but the subject consistently embodies attentive mercy and aid.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 18 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
