Catalogue Note

A large bronze Walking Buddha, or Phra Leela, made on Java and modelled after the fluid proportions of Thai Sukhothai sculpture. At 117 cm high, the narrow vertical composition has a strong architectural presence without the visual mass of a seated monument.

Construction & Condition

The figure was produced by traditional lost-wax casting and retains core residue through the open underside. A dark brown patina unifies the surface. Good vintage condition with normal casting irregularities and light wear. It is presented as a 20th-century Indonesian interpretation of the celebrated Thai walking-Buddha type.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

The hollow-cast bronze surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 11 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
