This Burmese bronze depicts the Buddha seated in meditation with both hands held near the chest in Dharmachakra Mudra, the gesture associated with turning the Wheel of Dharma.

The sculpture rests on a richly ornamented base with mythical creatures and protective figures. Its polished modelling and serene expression follow the Mandalay sculptural tradition, while the natural blue-green patina records the age and oxidation of the bronze surface.

Iconography and Context

Dharmachakra Mudra refers to setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion and is associated with the Buddha’s first teaching. The paired hand gesture makes the sculpture specifically didactic rather than simply meditative.
