This standing figure of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is hand-carved from a single block of wood. The serene face, flowing robes and raised hand give the sculpture a composed devotional presence suited to an altar or temple niche.
Carving and surface
Original gilding survives across protected and recessed areas of the headdress, robes and lotus-form base. Hand-cut details and visible tool marks reflect traditional workmanship, while the darkened surface, abrasion and losses to the gilding show long devotional use.
Condition
Stable overall, with natural surface wear, patina and losses to the original gilding consistent with age and use. Please examine all nine photographs for the complete view of the sculpture and its surface.
