Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 29 × W 21.5 cm
Weight: 3.7 kg
Material: Gilt bronze / copper alloy with pigment accents
Style: Tibetan Buddhist
Period: Second half of the 20th century
Provenance: Taiwan collection, according to the current record

A substantial later image of Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, seated with the traditional medicinal bowl. The fine lotus throne, gilt finish and painted accents follow established Tibetan Buddhist iconography.

This is transparently catalogued as a high-quality later 20th-century sculpture rather than as an antique Himalayan bronze.

Condition

Good vintage condition with patina, gilt wear and minor surface marks.

Iconography and Context

The Medicine Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru, embodies healing and the relief of suffering. A medicinal bowl or healing attribute distinguishes this iconography from more general images of Shakyamuni.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 18 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
