Catalogue Note

A small Chinese bronze image of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, standing in layered flowing robes on a lotus pedestal. The hands are held before the body around a small sacred object, while the high coiffure and gentle stance give the figure a composed vertical silhouette.

The bronze surface has a naturally aged brown patina with soft wear on the face, hands, robe edges and lotus petals. The open underside reveals the hollow interior of the casting.

Iconography and Context

Guanyin, Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig is the bodhisattva of compassion. Crown, lotus, vase and hand gestures vary by region, but the subject consistently embodies attentive mercy and aid.

Condition and Display
