Catalogue Note
This mid-20th-century Thai bronze Buddha is seated in Dhyana Mudra on an unusually elaborate elephant-supported pedestal. The still, symmetrical figure is set above a richly modelled architectural base, creating a strong contrast between meditative calm and decorative movement.
Meditation Buddha
Both hands rest in the lap in Dhyana Mudra, the gesture of concentration and inner balance. The Buddha’s composed face, tight hair curls, elongated earlobes and close-fitting robe are modelled with restrained clarity.
Elephant-Supported Pedestal
The broad tiered pedestal is the sculpture’s defining feature. Rows of elephants appear in relief beneath lotus borders, floral scrollwork and framed decorative panels. Seen from the sides and rear, the base forms a fully worked architectural throne rather than a simple support.
Bronze Surface
The seated figure carries a smooth warm-brown patina, while the darker pedestal retains deeper texture in its recessed ornament. The tonal contrast helps separate the calm upper figure from the richly detailed base.
