This life-size standing Mandalay Buddha is carved from teak and richly finished with black lacquer, gilt decoration, thayo relief work and coloured glass or mirror inlay. The shell-inlaid eyes and long flowing robe contribute to the unmistakable devotional character of late Burmese temple sculpture.

Natural shrinkage cracks, wear to the gilding and variations in the lacquer surface are visible throughout. These are important condition features of a large wooden sculpture and have been retained rather than cosmetically erased.

Condition

Strong antique presentation with age-related cracking, wear, small losses and surface variation. The sculpture remains an imposing architectural-scale Buddhist object.
