Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 71 × W 55 cm | Material: gilt bronze / copper alloy | Attribution: Himalayan, 18th–19th century

A monumental seated Shakyamuni Buddha with the right hand raised in abhaya mudra. The reverse is decorated with a hand-incised kasaya robe arranged in a geometric patchwork or rice-field pattern.

Iconography

Abhaya mudra is the gesture of reassurance and fearlessness. The monastic robe identifies the figure as Shakyamuni and is an important part of the sculpture's visual programme.

Attribution and condition

The sculpture is attributed broadly to a Tibetan/Himalayan monastic tradition of the 18th–19th century. The gilt surface is heavily worn in places and some robe lines appear to have been re-incised during the object's history. Interior oxidation and mineral deposits are documented but are not treated as stand-alone proof of age.

Iconography and Context

Abhaya Mudra is the open-palm gesture of reassurance, fearlessness and protection. It gives the figure a direct relationship with the viewer while preserving the image’s composed devotional character.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 15 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
