Catalogue Note

Singha A: H 103 × W 44 cm, 38 kg
Singha B: H 104 × W 44 cm, 49.6 kg
Total weight: 87.6 kg
Material: Heavy cast bronze with surviving gilding
Origin: Thailand / Siam
Dating: Attributed to the late 18th–early 19th century

An exceptional matched pair of monumental Thai Singha temple lions, cast at architectural scale and designed as protective guardians. Their vigorous manes, open mouths and robust stance are complemented by a Buddhist wheel or solar-wheel motif cast on the reverse.

The surfaces retain extensive aged gilding, dark patina and casting irregularities. The early Rattanakosin dating and the precise gilding technique remain art-historical attributions; microscopy and weight alone are not treated as definitive dating evidence.

Condition

Substantial antique condition with extensive wear to gilding, patina and age-related casting/surface variation. Offered as the original matched pair.
