Catalogue Note

A four-armed Vajrayana bodhisattva in the Nepalese Newar tradition, seated in lotus posture on a separately formed lotus base. The hands hold a group of ritual attributes that includes oil lamps, a lotus bud and a flame-like emblem. The elaborate crown, jewellery, patterned garments and balanced composition are characteristic of Kathmandu Valley metalwork.

The sculpture is hollow-cast in bronze using the lost-wax method and finished by hand. Remains of original fire gilding survive across the surface, accompanied by natural wear and oxidation consistent with age. The open underside clearly shows the interior of the casting.
