Catalogue Note

A closely related pair of seated bronze Buddhas, each modelled on a lotus base before an elaborate openwork aureole. One figure raises the right hand in a teaching gesture, while the other extends the right hand in the earth-touching gesture. Both hold a small vessel in the left hand.

Traces of fire gilding remain across the faces, robes, lotus bases and aureoles. Natural surface wear, patina and casting irregularities are visible throughout. Both figures are hollow cast; the open undersides reveal their rough casting interiors.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 29 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
