Catalogue Note

A harmonious pair of seated Nepalese Buddhas from the Newar metalworking tradition of the Kathmandu Valley. One figure raises the right hand in Abhaya Mudra, the gesture of protection and reassurance; the companion rests both hands in Dhyana Mudra.

The robes are densely hand engraved with square panels, floral motifs and linear borders. Traces of fire gilding remain on the faces, eyelids, robes and recessed decoration, contrasting with the naturally darkened bronze surface and areas of devotional wear.

Both figures are substantial casts of equal dimensions. Each lotus base is closed with a fitted metal underside plate.

Iconography and Context

Dhyana Mudra places both hands in the lap and expresses concentration, balance and meditative absorption. Its symmetry reinforces the sculpture’s calm, inward-looking presence.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 19 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
