A large seated Buddha with the right hand in vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching, and the left hand resting in meditation. The robe is particularly decorative, with a patchwork-like relief pattern containing repeated auspicious motifs.

An apocryphal Xuande-style mark and Tibetan-script elements appear on the reverse. They are treated as revival inscriptions rather than evidence of a Ming-period date.

Condition

Good vintage condition with gilt wear, patina and normal age-related marks.

Iconography and Context

Vitarka Mudra is the gesture of teaching and reasoned discussion, usually recognised by the joined thumb and index finger. It connects the image with the transmission and explanation of Buddhist doctrine.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 11 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
