Catalogue Note

A substantial Thai bronze Buddha seated in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the moment of enlightenment. The figure rests on a lotus base above a pierced, tiered pedestal. Its serene face, elongated earlobes, tightly curled hair and rising flame create the distinctive silhouette of Northern Sukhothai sculpture.

The flame-shaped finial is removable and is photographed both fitted and separately. The statue is hollow-cast and retains an aged bronze patina with mineral encrustation and oxidation. The underside shows traces of a former internal seal once used to close the casting.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The bronze surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 12 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
