Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 33.5 × W 7.6 cm | Weight: 0.8 kg | Origin: Thailand | Period: ca. 1920–1950 | Mudra: Abhaya Mudra

A slender crowned standing Buddha in the decorative Rattanakosin tradition, with elaborate royal dress and a tall pointed crown. Surviving gilding contrasts with the darker underlying metal and patina.

Iconography

The raised right hand forms abhaya mudra, the gesture of reassurance and fearlessness. Crowned Buddha imagery presents the Buddha in royal or universal-sovereign form.

Material and condition

Bronze or brass-rich copper alloy with old gilding, dark patina and remnants of casting material visible below. Normal age-related wear is present throughout.

Iconography and Context

Abhaya Mudra is the open-palm gesture of reassurance, fearlessness and protection. It gives the figure a direct relationship with the viewer while preserving the image’s composed devotional character.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 10 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
