A compact Thai Buddha sheltered by the multi-headed naga Muchalinda. The tiered base, serpent hood and worn gilt surface create a strong temple-style silhouette.

Iconography

According to Buddhist tradition, the naga king Muchalinda protected the meditating Buddha during a storm after his enlightenment. The subject became especially important in Southeast Asian Buddhist sculpture.

Material and condition

Bronze or brass-rich copper alloy with surviving gilding, red lacquer traces, dark patina and age-related wear. The surface is left in its historic condition.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 15 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
