A large Thai Buddha in Sukhothai revival style, seated in bhumisparsha mudra on a double lotus and hexagonal base. The elongated proportions, flame finial and restrained expression follow the classic Thai ideal of the enlightened Buddha.

The open underside retains old casting material and the bronze has developed a deep brown patina.

Condition

Good older condition with patina and normal age-related wear.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The bronze with retained casting material surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 14 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
