A compact but unusually heavy image of Green Tara, seated in lalitasana with one foot extended from the lotus throne.
Iconography
The hands form varada and vitarka gestures, while lotus stems rise beside the figure. Green Tara is one of the principal female figures of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism and is associated with active compassion.
Condition
Vintage gilt surface with natural rubbing on prominent areas, especially the knee and hands. No earlier antique date is claimed.
Iconography and Context
Vitarka Mudra is the gesture of teaching and reasoned discussion, usually recognised by the joined thumb and index finger. It connects the image with the transmission and explanation of Buddhist doctrine.
Condition and Display
Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 10 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
