A compact Thai bronze Buddha seated in meditation on a decorated pedestal. The right hand reaches down in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the Buddha's enlightenment, while the left hand rests in the lap.
The intimate scale is suited to personal devotional use. The casting retains a dark brown and green aged patina, with natural wear across the face, shoulders, hands and raised details of the base. The underside is closed and is photographed separately.
Iconography and Context
Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.
