A hand-finished bronze Buddha head modelled after the U Thong tradition of Thai sculpture. Its broad facial planes, long ears and restrained expression create a more robust profile than the later Sukhothai-inspired heads in the collection.

Surface

A green-grey verdigris finish settles into the modelling and gives the head a softly aged appearance. We catalogue the work as vintage and do not use the patina to imply archaeological or medieval age.

Condition

Good vintage condition with small surface variations and light wear from display and handling.

Iconography and Context

Presented without the full body, a Buddha head concentrates attention on the meditative expression, elongated earlobes, hair treatment and ushnisha. Surface and silhouette become especially important to the sculpture’s impact.
